“Please have a sit”, he asks her invitingly
He lights a cigar and immediately noticed a zit on her forehead. He grins away trying to remain as subtle as he possibly can. He did not want her to feel conscious about it.
And so the night began — they started as casual as before, talking about nothing.
They were goofing with the karaoke trying to sing as good as the original artists of their favourite songs. They took turns trying to find “Head over feet”, a song by Alanis Morissette, but it was not in the song list so they settled for whatever their pitiful vocal talents could attempt to try. Katyu was actively attempting to avoid saying or doing something stupid that could ruin the night for both of them. But when the alcohol kicked in, he pops a very interesting question.
“Kyle, why are you holding my hand?” he said.
Kyle grins and before she could reply he added, “Let me rephrase that. Why are you gripping back?”
Then Eric came intruding trying to take photos of them. He plays the part of the photographer for the evening. They struck poses fitting for the awesome pair that they are. It is beyond argument that they look good together. Kyle is a tough customer. She asks Eric to shoot repeatedly until she is satisfied.
Eric is a friend of Katyu. But he is dearer to Kyle for they grew up together in their rustic hometown. His charming personality more than made up for his unusual built. But what about Kyle, is it her irresistible charm? Is it her sexy hair? Is it her bright eyes, her soothing voice, her captivating smile? Katyu is just bewildered.
They really look good together (perhaps too good). Kyle rests her head on his shoulder. It felt good to Katyu. It has been a while since he had that feeling of intimacy. He ponders to himself the beautiful things that could arise should they decide to embrace the romance. But he realizes the complexity of the circumstance as well. Katyu is reminded that Kyle is for dreaming and not for keeping as she does her own rendition of Avril Lavigne’s “Why”.
Later that night he told her how he would be suppressing any intimate feeling towards her and she acknowledges it. But still they held each other’s hands so firmly and just could not seem to let go. Perhaps their souls found some peace there. And as the night ended, they too stood even closer.
The chilling air brought about by the early hours of the morning has betrayed what they agreed to stand for; which is friendship minus the intimacy. All night she sat so close and stood so close that he could almost kiss her every time, only if he was brave enough to try, and only if she had asked him to. He knew that somewhere within those eyes, she sees him differently and that somewhere within that hankering heart is a chance for redemption. But he also knew that it would not be easy. The arduous task of proving himself worthy is one he is not ready to take on yet. And there is his worry also that she may just be playing games with him. If so, it would kill him instantly.
