Is the World Getting More Evil or Has It Always Been This Bad?

It would be real easy for me to start raving and ranting and quoting Jeremiah and some stuff from the book of Revelation right about now, especially since I am a hard core Baptist. I will try to refrain from that, buy no guarantees.

As I look around today, I am appalled at the quantity and frequency of just downright evil things I see happening in our world. Since I live in the Philippines, I am subjected to a fair dose of lying, deceit, dishonesty and thievery every day. I am pretty used to that by now, having lived on the isle of Cebu for almost 3 years now.

What I am talking about are the truly horrible, atrocious, vicious crimes of rape, murder, incest, child pornography and the like. Watching the nightly news on TV now has come to be a test of endurance. I see and hear about fetuses left in trash dumps, houseboys murdering their employer and his entire family, policemen dealing drugs, overseas employers in places like Saudi Arabia beating and raping their Filipino house maids and on and on. If one is into gore, violence and horrific events, I recommend watching the news on just about any channel on television. It is truly sickening.

Here’s my question for your perusal and analysis. Is it or is it not true that the world seems to be MORE evil now than in past times? That is a bit broad so let’s narrow it down to say, a timeline of from 1800 up to the present day, worldwide. More or less evil or about the same? I tend to lean towards the MORE evil description. Reason: there does not seem to be any clear moral compass for people any more. Oh, there is, but no one is paying any attention to it. It is called the Bible. Living in a land supposedly full of Catholics, I thought I would be safe. Ha! Nothing could be further from the truth. My wife and I are literally scared to death to leave our high walled apartment compound after about 6 o’ clock at night. Our church has Wednesday night services which start at 7:00 P.M. and I cannot convince her to leave our place and go out at night, even to go to church. That is how bad it is, at least to us. There was a Korean guy murdered about 100 yards from our doorstep of our first apartment we lived in here.

Do not think I am excluding America. Oh, no. America has its share of stomach-turning crimes as well. There are murders in America as well…shootings, stabbings, drownings, poisonings, etc. It just seems that the NUMBER of such has increased.

It’s not just the headline crimes that have increased. Just the daily attitudes of people now really stink. Ever had someone LATELY open the door for you at a store or let you go ahead of them in line at the cashier? I have not, not in a very long time, either in America or in the Philippines. Morality now seems to be a matter of choice and there are no clear cut lines of right and wrong…WAY too many gray areas. That is not the way I was raised. My parents DID believe in clear cut lines of demarcation between right and wrong, as did most of that generation. My generation took things a little more lightly than did my parents’ generation and my son’s generation…wow! Anything goes..and..”if it feels good, do it”, really are their mantras these days, it seems. Even mentioning the Bible or morality is pooh-poohed as old fashioned and being out of touch with reality. I cannot tell my grown son ANYTHING now. At age 29, he apparently is an expert on everything. Incredible. I love him to pieces but it breaks my heart to see and hear about some of the things he does. No, he hasn’t murdered anyone, raped anyone and he does not use or sell drugs. He does drink a lot of alcohol and he has some very weird tattoos on his body. He also smokes tobacco. I am against all of that but my opinions on that only seem to stoke his desire to do more of it so now I don’t hardly say anything about his behavior in front of him. He even went so far as to delete me as a “friend” on FACEBOOK. Ouch. That hurt. No support from his mother, my ex-wife of many years now, of course. She would defend him no matter what he did. She always has.

My own belief is that we are indeed living in “the last days.” What does that mean? Well, I believe that in the total accumulated time span of human history, we homo sapiens are getting close to the end of our existence on this earth…as in extinction. Why do I believe that? Basically, because of a LOT of Biblical prophecy that seems to be playing out and becoming reality…a lot of that centered around Israel and the middle east..and partly because of the observations I have already stated here.

What can we do about this? Actually, not much. All I can do as an individual is to try and clean up my own act and live according to the word of God,as much as I can. I still have a ways to go on that, trust me, so I am not saying I am perfect or anywhere close to perfect. Oh, no! What I am saying is this…if we are in the last days, however long that may be, shouldn’t we all start opening doors for each other, letting each other ahead in line at the stores and STOP all the senseless killing, raping and stealing? Wars? That would be a whole other article, which I may some day submit…IF…I am still alive and on this earth.

  1. Hi Steve! I am a Filipino working overseas and I enjoy reading your blog. write some more.

    • Nolanray, LOL! Thanks, but you may be in the minority with that opinion. LOL!

      • yeah..i noticed that upon reading comments. i think people needs to learn how to handle criticisms..anyway you are just writing what you experienced there.. i dont see any problem with that and as i said i enjoy your blog :) write some more!

By the way , do you really have lots of Filipino friends there? i hope your somehow enjoying Cebu, im from Manila and never been outside Luzon.

        • Nolanray, YES, I do have a lot of Filipino friends. Some of them are Filipinas married to Americans but others are married to Filipinos or are widows or widowers. The Philippines is not a bad place…just needs some “fine tuning.”

          • ah okay.. i hope you you don’t generalize Filipinos.. Any race has its good and bad qualities anyways..
btw while your in Cebu. enjoy the place .. try Bohol :)

            • We visited Bohol…visited the world’s smallest monkey…saw the world’s largest captive python…and also the world’s smallest man…a 64 year old dwarf who stays in a baby carrier and his sister takes care of him. Pretty pitiful. I think..for actually living…with the best malls and best hospitals…we will stay on the isle of Cebu.

Like many, you have a misconception about the Truth and also of what defines evil. First of all, acknowledge the reality that the Catholic Church is the “Mother” of all false churches and is defined as such in Revelation. Truly, anyone who actually sits down and becomes educated from their own Bible already recognizes that church as a big joke that breaks every rule in the Book. You cannot ignore the dark and ugly history of it.

Second, evil doesn’t just come in the form of war and crime. There is an evil far worse than the obvious. It comes in the form of idolatry, selfishness, and materialism. This narrowminded culture we live in defines evil as the opposite of good. But it defines it in a watered down kind of way. Just as the devil has been promoted as a man in a red suit holding a pitchfork, living underground. The world is evil through and through. You can barely trust anything you are exposed to. Businesses are unethical and will tell us anything to make a sale. And 99% of what we buy is junk we don’t need. We willfully conform to a culture that has redefined wants as “needs”. This is part of Satan’s clever attempt to cause people to sin unknowingly. Deception and temptation go hand in hand and both have become the fabric of society. Satan is the ruler of this world. And because it is nearing the end, he has been working overtime. The remarkable change for the worse became very obvious after GW Bush became president. This whole world has turned upside down. And the aftermath is a new downhill path that EVERYONE is forced to ride on.

Don’t think that obeying God “the best you can” is going to be good enough. Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven. And he CLEARLY told us that we must walk away from our worldly lives to follow Him. He was a poor man by choice. He lived by necessity. He spent every day of his life proving his loyalty to God. HE SAID TO FOLLOW HIM. Many did so upon his command. They gave up what they had. Satan has created a society that gives us everything we want. Our lives have gotten infested with many material things that are too hard to give up. The majority will be like the rich man who told Jesus he couldn’t give up his possessions. It was just too much to do. He walked away. Jesus forgave the prostitute and told her to “Go and sin no more!”. Yes. She was forgiven. But she was also told the way to salvation. SIN NO MORE. In other words, turn away from a willful life of sin. Yes. We will always be vulnerable to sin. But we do have a choice. We can leave that life. We cannot carry God with us unless we do leave it. Else, one day Jesus will say “I never knew you”. You can say His name as many times in your life as you want, just like the hypocrites in the churches. But believing and having faith arent enough to know Jesus. Doing the things he did, and walking the walk he did are the only ways to follow Him. Any other way is a foolish hypocrites path.

The Bible tells us that many will seek the door to Heaven. But only a few will find it and enter. This tells me that many will believe in vain. Yes. They will think they followed God. But they followed their own desires and made God secondary. They sacrificed nothing at all. You cannot drive fancy cars, have fancy homes, go on fancy vacations, and wear fancy clothes and know God. This tells me again that the majority will never find God. They worship the false God named Satan. He’s easier to follow. He “forgives” your sins while letting you keep sinning. That’s the popular lie and most churches preach this false gospel. The Bible even tells me this. Are you reading your Bible?

    • Joe M, (??) I am reading my Bible daily. I have been a Baptist for 30 years now. I used to teach an adult Bible class back in Texas. I “toned down” what I really wanted to say for the general “population” here on this blog. I agree with you 100%!!!

  3. If all the bad things don’t happen, the end also doesn’t. So if it really happens, then it happens. Let’s just put it in God’s hands.

    • LOL! No, Clouie, evil is the “state of the nation” in both the Philippines and the United States of America right now. As has already been mention in the replies here, GREED, is going to be the ruination and end of mankind.
