Filipino Teachers: Kazakhstan’s Key to English Literacy
It was in 2009 when Kazakhstan unlocked its door to welcome Filipino English Teachers as part of the country’s 10-year program for English Literacy. In the span of two years, there are already at least hundred of Filipinos assigned to different cities who have been teaching English to Kazakh students and to some professionals who want to develop their English comprehension and communication skill.
English is not widely spoken in the country. Most people speak either in Russian or in their native language, Kazakh. Most signs and ads are also written in both languages. People can be rated as zero-English speakers. It was recently mentioned that among other non-English speaking foreign countries, Kazakhstan belongs to the bottom five joining with Panama, Colombia, Thailand, and Turkey as cited by the website, The Economist.
Economic and Political status wise, Kazakhstan is regarded as the ambitious and the most competitive country in Central Asia. Its vision to be known in the world is truly achievable. But before conquering the globe, the people of Kazakhstan must learn the language internationally spoken by general population. This is the reason of the country’s president, Nursultan Nazarbayev to launch his agenda of employing the most qualified individuals to assist his citizens in embracing the interest in becoming skilled in the English language. With this motivated goal, he is looking forward that in the future, Kazakhstan will be able to communicate with the world.
These reasons are just enough to ponder that educating Kazakhstan with English is not a delicious piece of cake to consider. And so we are here now to set another world record that Filipinos, compared to those native English speakers are one of the most easily understood trainers of the international lingo. It is our humble pride to become the foremost catalysts in teaching the Kazakhs how to understand and communicate in English.
The hardships of adapting to their environment; learning their language in order to foster better understanding and interaction with people; adjusting to their English comprehension level by speaking so slowly that sometimes we forgot to mind the structure of our statements anymore – serve as our inspirations to refine our mission to educate them. At the end of the day, it is our little accomplishment that we are able to be figured out by them and we are able to teach them the basic way of conversational English. One step at a time, we Filipino teachers here in Kazakhstan believe that our effort will never be in vain.
It is also our joy that the appreciations of those who have been learning with us in the period of two years are becoming countless and the gratitude we are receiving from them towards Filipino ways of teaching English is sufficient driving force to carry on with our purpose of being the Kazakhstan’s notable key in terms of its people’s English literacy advancement.
Indeed, the precious features of Filipino teachers around the world do not just rely on intellectual level and the skills to utilize strategies and techniques of instruction but what matters most, is the kind of heart we have. We have the patience above every aspect of life and the passion and sincerity with all our endeavors. And among these strategies, our SMILES stand out. That whatever circumstances we face, we can forever manage to show them that Filipinos are determined, highly spirited and cheerful.
Yes, being a teacher is indeed a noble profession. And being a Filipino educating other races makes it the noblest, makes a difference that stand out among the rest.

Hi guys, I am working as ICT Teacher in Khartoum Sudan for the past 6 years. But recently I was able to find this ad on the internet about the need of 6 ICT teachers in KZ. How’s the weather in KZ? Well, in Africa we know that it is too hot. How’s the life in KZ? Is it peaceful? If ever they decided to hire me then I will have this idea about living in KZ. Thanks.
Hello Sir Michael,
I was impressed reading your article on Filipino teachers in Kazakhstan. I was interviewed by the employers from Suleymen Demirel Univeristy (SDU) Kazakhstan last April 24, 2011 via skype in their office. I’m willing to travel in Kazakhstan to experience the life in Central Asia. I’ve been writing to many penpals in Uzbekistan, Belarus, Latvia, Turkey, Armenkistan, & Kazakhstan 18 yrs ago. SDU is waiting for me to finish my PhD in Manila.
Regards to Filipino teachers! Spread English & Talk to the world.

It is indeed nice to read your article. I am also teaching here in Almaty for five years now-2007 the present. How about creating a community for Filipino teachers here in Kazakhstan? Or Filipino community in general? This online community is a good way to start of with. What do you think guys?
hello Mark,
your suggestion really impressed me. I am also a teacher in Kazakhstan since 2011. we were assigned to different schools in different cities. in our company there are 8 of us. well. i guess let’s start it and make filipinos be known not only in Kz but whole wide world. i’m proud to be a teacher, and i’m proud to be a filipino.
Hey guys! We are really happy that filipino teachers work in our country, if somebody need some job opportunity (ESL teacher position), please do not hesitate and contact us [email protected].
Hi,
I’m glad of what you wrote on one of the blogs here in the net. I am more than willing to work in Kazakhstan as an ESL teacher. I worked there for almost 2 years. I traveled from different cities in different schools all over Kz. territory. I really enjoyed my life in your country. If given a chance to work again in your country, let me know if there’s any job available for me. Hoping for your immediate reply. Thanks and more power.

Hi Angie. Cost of living here is really expensive. We get fair amount but considering the daily expenses and other necessities like clothes for Winter, what’s left for us is enough to survive monthly.
nAH..Filipino children already knew how to speak English…kahit pakonti2x lang…hahaha
yeah that’s true jay.
Much better to teach our fellow filipino than other..lets first increase our educated chidren before other nation.
You can’t blame those Filipino teachers who decided to teach abroad. You know what are the reasons behind. Given the chance if you are a teacher and you are supporting your loved ones, or being a breadwinner of your family… will you not give up the pride of helping your fellow citizens than giving your family the best life?
There is always a good reason. It is not just about money. There are other reasons behind.
i totally agree!!!
if given a chance to be there,i would be very a happy to teach there…
There is a big chance Mariles. Kazakhstan is hiring more teachers. Visit workabroad.ph
