Pinoy Seaman thanks Stornoway Coast Guard for Rescue

A happy Filipino seaman says a big thank you to the staff at Stornoway Coastguard who helped save his life following a fall at sea.
Orlando Maglangang was airlifted by Stornoway Coastguard rescue helicopter from the Dutch cargo vessel the MV Sampogracht last Wednesday (March 2) and transferred to Western Isles Hospital, after a tumble in rough seas saw him sustain serious head injuries and lacerations.

The 44 year old father of three was the cook on-board the vessel which was carrying a cargo of aluminium from Canada to Norway.

Mr Maglangang’s accident happened when the boat was 10 miles west of South Uist, and the first chopper attempt to airlift the injured seaman to safety had to be abandoned due to storm force winds and high seas.

Following the incident, Mr Maglangang spent two days in hospital before being discharged into the care of Stornoway Fishermen’s Mission.

Port Missioner Finlay Macleod said: “On being taken to hospital he thought he had been taken to Norway, where his ship was heading, and was fully expecting to be reunited with his personal belongings. He was a bit surprised to find he was in Stornoway.”

Mr Maglangang was given hotel accommodation, clothing, financial aid and repatriation back home to Manilla by the Stornoway Fishermen’s Mission, but before leaving returned to the Stornoway Coastguard centre to thank the men who had helped save his life.
